Genome Sequence of the Nematode C. elegans: A Platform for Investigating Biology
ثبت نشده
چکیده
The 97-megabase genomic sequence of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans reveals over 19,000 genes. More than 40 percent of the predicted protein products find significant matches in other organisms. There is a variety of repeated sequences, both local and dispersed. The distinctive distribution of some repeats and highly conserved genes provides evidence for a regional organization of the chromosomes.

متن کاملGenomics and biology of the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae.
The soil nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae is an attractive model system for studying evolution of both animal development and behavior. Being a close relative of C. elegans, C. briggsae is frequently used in comparative studies to infer species-specific function of the orthologous genes and also for studying the dynamics of chromosome evolution. The genome sequence of C. briggsae is valuable in...
متن کاملIntroduction to nematode evolution and ecology.
Sydney Brenner originally conceived Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system for building a fundamental understanding of animal genetics, development and behavior, but it is also rapidly becoming a respectable model for evolutionary studies. Although C. elegans molecular biologists have long appreciated the value of sequence comparisons to identify conserved regions as indicators of function, a...
